The Back Garden Farm Biography.

A little about our journey, we hope you'll be inspired to join us.

Back Garden Farm  came about over a glass of red wine one summers evening. Richard and Mike, both good friends, were discussing business ideas, Mike has his own IT business and is also a bit of an entrepreneur. Richard, a trained horticulturist, has his own small landscape design business, but was playing with various ideas and wanting try something different.

They both share a love for good conversation, a good pint and exceptional food.

Previously a head gardener of several large gardens Richard was chatting about his recent experiences. Owners of big estates he had visited had their vegetables grown for them in their kitchen gardens, and the best cuts of meat from their own farms butchered for them. They get great food by telling their employees what they want. Richard had been amazed at the flavours he had encountered at a lunch he had been given.

Just how do we take that from the estate and give it to everyone?

Back Garden Farm was born, and essentially the core of this has not changed. Great food, produced by us,  for you to enjoy, in a totally environmentally sound way. Karen joined us, an interior designer,  she has a warm enthusiasm that every one who meets her loves. Karen loved what we were trying to achieve.

Together, we have come a long way, we aspire to great times. Long summer days, relaxing in a beautiful garden with our family or friends, enjoying a wonderful meal that seems to last all afternoon, conversation drifting on into the evening, happy days.

There's a little sign on our office wall. "Make every day so special it's worth remembering"

With all the added ingredients of Back Garden Farm, special times are what we hope to give you.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a collection of the most common questions that we receive.

Are the beds child friendly?

Yes, all beds have been designed  to be completely safe, there are no screws or fixings to catch yourself on, all wood is prepared so no splinters, and we avoid using chemicals in anything we do.

We are a company who have heard about your schools package concept, how do we get involved?

We actively encourage businesses to get involved. You can sponsor a school package, we will deliver, and we will all benefit from the associated PR that we will manage. You also receive tax breaks for charitable gifts, so you are not actually spending anything.

Do you provide bespoke packages?

Yes, all our products and services are customisable.

What are the advantages of using raised beds?

Raised beds give several advantages over just digging straight into the ground. The soil warms more quickly in the spring sun giving your growing season a head start and gives you a higher yield. Due to the size, all parts of the bed are within easy reach, this means every square cm of soil can be used for growing, no paths, no waste. Our soil is screened it has no big stones, these have an impact when growing root crops like carrots, stones cause the roots to split giving you strange shapes that are hard to prepare. Our beds can go almost anywhere, even on concrete. If you have mobility difficulties, we have products to suit you. Our products look good and will be an asset to any garden.

Where can you deliver to?

We are able to cover a large part of the UK with bases in Leatherhead and Northampton.

Are discounts available if I order more than one bed?

Yes, discounts are available with product packages and service packages for multiple orders ? Please contact us for more information.

We are a school without any funding for our project but would love to get involved ? What ideas do you have?

We have lots of ideas. We have access to charitable grants. We like to build local connections and try to encourage your local businesses to sponsor a school package. They get great PR and tax breaks, you get whatever you need.  We can also help you raise funds in school with "veg out" days. Children can pay to wear their own clothes for a day, the money raised can purchase a package or beds, we can install the beds on the day so students can see that what they are doing is helping the school and if you like, one of our staff can run little workshops for classes through out the day. Please look at our school packs in the school section of the website, or contact us for more information.

Who supplied your wonderful photography?

We would like to thank Jane Elms for supplying our vegetable & garden bed photography.

Our Customers Feedback...

Richard Hillery has worked for me for about three years on my large garden and woodland.
In that time he has shown himself to be more than just a diligent, thoughtful, and reliable worker, he also has talent and creativity. If someone should choose to invest in those qualities, I am sure they will be pleasantly surprised.

Damon Hill OBE
Mill Hill School, Ripley, Derbyshire, wishes to promote an understanding and love of gardening. We are very pleased with our raised beds and fruit garden installed by Back Garden Farm. Their expertise enabled us to involve the students quickly this academic year in our Eco Schools projects. Students are working with School Staff, Trish Dolan and Tony McIlroy to grow a wider range of fruits and vegetables - this produce will then go to the School Kitchen for ingredients in school meals. We are developing students knowledge of where fruit and vegetables come from; we are developing the skills in being able to tend effectively to small plants and developing their understanding that working the land can have many beneficial effects on students self esteem, self worth and confidence. The mentoring provided by school staff involved in the project has already re-engaged reluctant learners back into school. As part of our Healthy Schools project, we are aiming to increase student meal take up - developing an understanding of where the food comes from is part of this project. Ann said "I really enjoy being outside, watering the new plants". Peter comments "We need to take turns looking after beds - its a great thing to do at lunchtime". "We all want to help! We squabble a bit, but we look forward to coming to Eco-Club everyday" Darren said. Mrs Graham, Headteacher said "We are delighted with the impact the new garden has had already, the students fundraising on non uniform days has really built something they are very proud of".

Mill Hill School, Ripley, Derbyshire
Working with Back Garden Farm is a superb opportunity for our students. commented Jules White, Head Teacher at Tanbridge House School. He continued "We strive to build strong links with external businesses in the community to ensure continuity and breadth of experience in a co-educational environment. Having a new organic vegetable bed on our allotment allows the students to discover a new side of biology from a fun and exciting angle. The students are all extremely excited about watching their hard work grow and being able to finally eat the fruits of their labour.
